Lateral Wedging for Knee osteoarthritis

February 8, 2010 on 6:00 am | By admin | In Miscellaneous | Comments Off

Arthritis of the knee is common in older persons and is very disabling as the knee is a major weight bearing joint used for walking and getting around. The most effective way to help the pain and slow the progression is loosing weight, but this is not always the most practical. Other methods to treat include using physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the knee. Lateral wedging in the shoe has been shown to change the alignment at the knee and may help with symptoms. Often drugs are used to help with pain relief. If all else fails the last resort is knee replacement surgery.
